The MUIIS project harnesses the power of satellite data to support extension and advisory services to farmers in Uganda. The project has a strong focus on capacity building of farmers organizations and serves the need for timely, accurate and actionable information regarding crop management and climate risks. EARS is a data partner and is helping to develop the insurance component of the service bundle.
The MUIIS project develops and markets a bundle of agricultural information products through SMS and smartphone apps which enable Ugandan farmers to access satellite-based crop advice and financial services.
The service bundle includes weather forecasts, early warnings of drought, tips on climate and crop cultivation, access to a farmer helpdesk, and an index insurance component. The product will ultimately be owned and marketed by farmers themselves.
The MUIIS consortium consists of satellite data providers, farmers organizations and technology partners in both the private and public sector.
