River basin monitoring and flow forecasting

In large and poorly gauged river basins, satellite monitoring can provide timely observations and data products that support water resources management. By coupling our near real-time data products to a hydrological model developed by UNESCO-IHE we have developed a system capable of monitoring water resources and forecasting discharges in large basins such as the Yellow River and the Niger River.

What products and services does EARS offer?

The coupled EWBMS and LSHM system can be implemented in large river basins throughout the world. It has been used for:

  • Simulating and forecasting river discharges
  • Monitoring water balances of sub-catchments
  • Monitoring of drought and water availability throughout the basin

How does it work

Using the EWBMS, hourly Meteosat images and WMO-GTS rain gauge measurements are processed into daily precipitation and evapotranspiration. These are in turn used to force a grid-based distributed rainfall-runoff model (the Large Scale Hydrological Model – LSHM), developed by UNESCO-IHE. The LSHM models infiltration and runoff and routes this (through stream flow, surface flow and groundwater flow) towards the basin outlet.
